Installing Outfall in Perranporth

Special Drilling Projects

Necessity is the Mother of Invention

When South West Water came to us with the problem of installing a 10″ sewage outfall through a hole drilled from the top of a 300′ cliff in Cornwall to a target of one metre below Mean Low water springs we knew we had a challenge on our hands.

A previous attempt by another company to drill the hole in one pass had failed after some 3 months of effort.

We decided that a pilot hole would have to be drilled using diamond drilling methods to ensure accuracy and this hole (56mm in diameter) could then be reamed out to the required diameter (12″) using a DTH drill.

The Diamond drill hole had to be continuously surveyed and wedged to guide it into position.

The drilling challenge was successfully met and the outfall now serves the Perranporth area in Cornwall.

A similar drilling method was also used to install an outfall at Mevagissey in Cornwall and was also highly successful.

If you have a problem involving drilling speak to the people who can tailor a solution to meet your needs.

Previous projects have included:
  • The installation of Piezometers in an Earthfill dam at the Wheal Jane Mine Site in Cornwall For the Environment Agency by DTH drilling.
  • The drilling of blast holes on the sea bed in Pembroke Dock, West Wales for Seacore from their Jack up rig.
  • Pressure relief drilling in the Victorian dams of the Elan valley in Mid Wales for Severn Trent Water and the Burrrator and Roadford Dams in Devon for South West Water.
